POWERADE ISOTONIC SEQTL ROUND TEN WRAP

By: Karley Banks

The final round of the PowerAde Isotonic South East Queensland Touch League (SEQTL) was played at the Brisbane Metropolitan Touch Association’s Whites Hill Complex on Friday 17 August 2007.

The final round of fixtures crystallized the make-up of major and minor semi-final combatants who will have the traditional week’s rest before lining up for the finals series commencing on Friday 31 August 2007.

In the PowerAde Isotonic SEQTL Men’s Open round of fixtures Colts recorded a convincing 7 – 2 victory over a game Tigers outfit in the early game at 7.20pm.

Ben and Matt Roberts were dominant for Colts who wrapped up second spot and a major semi-final birth with the confidence-boosting win that would have pleased coach Brent O’Shanesy, after an indifferent performance last week against Country Club United (CCU).

Charles Seeto, who has been outstanding all season for the Tigers boys, was again his team’s most potent player.

CCU wrapped up the minor premiership and pole position for the finals series with a hard fought 8-6 victory over Uni-Rebels in the 8.10pm timeslot.

Youngsters Tommy Eyles and National 20 Years Mixed squad member Ryan Jacks bankrolled the CCU victory, whilst 2006 Queensland Mixed Open lynchpin Damien Moar again produced the big plays on cue for Rebels.

In the nightcap 9.00pm timeslot, Southern Storm prevailed 6-5 over Dodgers in an intense battle that gave spectators a sneak peak of the upcoming minor-semi final match-up between the two outstanding attacking outfits in the competition.

Storm’s commitment to driving and playing mistake free touch when it mattered most won the day with 2007 Australian Mixed Open star Ben ‘Boozer’ Mc Cullen, Ryan Pollock, youngster Cody Green, and winger Graham Clancy leading the ‘Storm boys’ to victory.

Mercurial playmakers Drummayne Dayberg Muir and Jason Stanton were absent for the Storm, which hints at Storm’s depth and adds even greater merit to the performance of the Southside club in securing the premiership points.

Leon Skinner and Australian Men’s Open lynchpin Nathan Jones never stopped scheming for Dodgers and the closeness of the contest sets up an intriguing battle in the elimination semi-final on Friday 31 August 2007.

In the final round of PowerAde Isotonic SEQTL Women’s Open fixtures for 2007, Colts made a welcome return to form with a solid 4-0 victory Country Club United at 7.20pm.

The Colts girls had drawn 3-3 with Southern Storm mid week in a rescheduled round three contest, and are slowly but surely finding their rhythm again after losing momentum mid season.

Colts 2007 Australian Women’s Open gun Peta Rogerson, who had been absent in recent weeks, made a strong return to lead her team around the park astutely, along with Nikki Etheridge, and the consistent Casey Clark.

CCU, despite being down on playing numbers, kept digging with Kate Adams and Australian 18 Years Girls Squad member Kelly Jones giving their all for the Northside club.

Dodgers wrapped up a maiden Major-Semi-final appearance with an impressive 5-3 victory over 2006 SEQTL Grand finalists Southern Storm.

Led by a great attacking display from Amy Turner, and the solid defence of Sharyn Cassell, Dodgers put together a strong back end of the game to repel a Storm team who despite a bright opening, struggled for cohesion in the second half.

Australian Women’s Open Captain Sharyn ‘Billy’ Williams, Kirsty ‘Harry’ Quince, and Sarah Spacie tried hard to lift the Storm who will now grapple with Colts in the minor semi-final.

2006 Premiers University-Rebels had to dig deep to overcome a fast finishing Crushers outfit 4-3 in the 9.00pm timeslot to secure a major-Semi Final showdown with the in form Dodgers next Friday.

At 2-2 at half time, the game ebbed and flowed and Rebels, the competition’s big guns, had to pull out all stops to secure the points against the rookie Crusher girls who have been the competition’s big improvers in recent weeks.

Renee Murphy, Australian Women’s Open star Teena Mc Ilveen, and Toni Elthrington excelled for Rebels, who will need to draw on all their championship qualities in coming weeks to keep their hopes alive of a three-peat of premierships.

Crushers Captain Belinda “Bindoss” Hammett, Emma “Buddha” Beattie, and 14 year-old Kate Mc Carthy who scorched across the field for a fine touchdown in her debut for the tri-colours, were best for Crushers in a committed team performance.

All rounds have now also been completed in the Men’s and Women’s Division Two and Three A/B sections.

The 2007 PowerAde Isotonic SEQTL Finals Series will commence in earnest on Friday 31 August 2007, after a week’s recess.
